The flip-side to my bright, bold and colourful artworks are these expressionistic semi-realistic animal portraits. Using photos as a reference and through my ability to connect on a such a deep level I can bring out the animals soul character and render the painting an emotional experience that the animal’s human guardian can treasure for many years to come..
I work on heavy watercolour paper using acrylics and oil pastels. The nature oil pastels prevents a hyper realistic interpretation, they naturally encourage a more expressive approach. I love doing these portraits as I love animals, and the act of reproducing a photo also provides me with an antidote to the more abstracted work I do. One discipline always informs the other.
‘I had no hesitation in commissioning Lucy to paint the portrait of our dear Poodle, William, as a birthday present to my husband. She completely captured his graceful and gentle beauty and the quality of the summer light from the photo that she was using as reference. The empathy that she has with animals is evident as much in her art as in life.’ Francoise Ardin, London, UK
With some animals, especially, rescues I can ask them about their previous life., as I did with the portrait of Nelly below.
Nelly was picked up from the streets of Thessaloniki, Greece. She was one of five abandoned little dogs and as she was already about seven years old learning about her former life and why she’d been dumped was very interesting and helpful for her new human guardian. I only communicate if asked to.
I work from photos; clear, well-lit, well composed photos. It doesn’t have to be with a fancy camera, this one of Theo and April was taken with a phone camera. I edit the photos to get the image that you will like and that I will want to work from. I provide regular updates as the work progresses.
This is intensive work, usually taking up to at least two weeks or more plus up to 3 weeks (depends on current climate) for the oil pastels to be dry enough to ship. Prices start at £450 for a large approx 55cm x 75 cm, 22” x29”, painting (depending on composition) I ask for a 50% non-refundable deposit before beginning. When it’s finished the painting is rolled up and shipped in a postal tube. I have shipped to all parts of the globe, they always arrive safely. It will need framing once you receive it.
Please use the contact page to enquire about commissioning me to immortalise your beloved animal companion.
This is King Kahuna, a very special cat that I communicated with on several occasions assisting him and his human guardian through his transition. His human guardian, Francesca Cassini has now written a book about her life with this being and how death is not the end of life. My communications are featured in the book and his portrait is part of the back cover. Now available to order, click the ‘learn more’ button below.
